  1. The making of whips was one of the crafts carried on in the district. The whips were not like the ones now but they were strong and tough. The names which were put on them, were called buts because the ends were very strong.
The stuff which was used for making one of these whips was most surprising. The person who wanted his whip went to the nearest bog with his sickle. Then he cut a bunch of rushes and put them under oxter which means his arm. Then he trudged home and started making it. No tools were needed save another person to hold the rushes and a piece of string. Then the work began. A small bundle of rushes were tied together and then more rushes were singly wound round these and fastened at the ends. Then the whip was finished and left on the chimneypiece for some days before it was ready for use.
