- Potato LoreEvery farmer nearly cultivates half an acre of potatoes at least. The ground is ploughed, harrowed and rolled. It is made into drills with a double plough. The women get the "sciollain" ready. There must be an eye in every "sciollain". These are put into the drills about nine inches apart. The crop has to be kept free from weeds, it has to be wed with a horse-hoe or a hand-hoe.
They have to be sprayed with blue-stone about every three weeks. The spraying operations should begin before July, because it is in July the blight starts. When Autumn comes the farmer gathers all his and digs the potatoes. All the children pick the potatoes, the black ones are given to the animals while the good ones are stored away in a pit. The pit is made of clay 2 inches deep, they are covered with straw or hay to prevent the frost from destroying them. The potatoes are turned once or twice to prevent them from decaying.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
