- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)5. Hurleys were made from ash trees care being taken to have the grain in the proper direction.
6. Balls. These were made by ripping an old woolen stocking and winding the wool round a cork or piece of turf. This was then covered and sewn (with the rib of an umbrella for a needle I have heard but I don't know how it could be possible)
7. Snares and Cribs were made with sally rods for catching birds and rabbits. Nowadays some birds are caught with bird lime.
8. Little cars were made with timber boxes having polish boxes for wheels.
9. Whips were made from plaited rushes.
10. Whistles were made from reeds of wheat.
11. Boats were made from the leaves of "fellestrums"(Iris)
12. Rattlers. A stone in a box was the old type of rattler for children.
Little boys also played with hoops, kites and "gob stones".
Most of these toys are no longer to be seen. They have been replaced by the cheap dolls and mechanical toys but I have no doubt that the old home-made toys afforded as much amusement as the modern shop-toy.
