- The Forge July 1st 1938There are three forges in this district - Graces forge, William Cavanaghs forge in the windmill and his son's John Cavanaghs in Modreeny. Graces forge is in the Main St opposite the pump. W Cavanagh's forge is opposite the Chapel and John Cavanagh's is at the cross of Modreeny about two miles from Cloughjordan.
James Costello now works in Graces forge. He is a nephew of John Grace and he is working in the forge for over twenty years. His grandfather worked in a forge in Loughane about two and a half miles from Cloughjordan. The remains of Graces forge in Loughane is still to be seen; only one wall is left standing to this day. My Grandfather bought the farm and the forge. Graces left the house over one hundred years ago and they came and had a forge in the place where our school is now built. In the year 1847 there was a big wind storm and the roof was blown off the forge.
