Patrick Kelleher taught at the "Old Chapel" of Clouna where Clune's ricks of hay presently stand. The children sat round on sods of turf and wrote on slates with home made pencils. This teacher taught reading, writing and arithmetic in English and christian doctrine in Irish.
Brian O'Looney, Monreel afterwards, Professor Brian O'Looney Royal Irish Academy, Dublin received his early education here. One of the scholars - Donncadh Rynne son of John Rynne Cullenagh always brought his dog "Sammy" to school with him. The dog sat behind the door and if Donnchadh was to be punished he shouted "Tackle 'im Sammy" and the dog immediately attacked the master thus saving the lad. The expression "Tackle 'im Sammy" is still used in the district by people when they hear dogs barking.
