    About 80 yrs ago there was a hedge school held in an old barn belonging to Hanratty - in the Castle Lane near Annagassan Co. Louth. He name of the teacher was James Byrcie. Only about a dozen children attended- Some were seated on old stools, while others got flags and sat on them. Of course the children had no books, but were taught out of the masters books. They were obliged to commit most of their work to memory-
    These facts were by Patrick Casey and old resident in Tullydonnel Dunleer Co. Louth.
    He attended the school for years.
