- Country people are generally weatherwise, and they can tell the kind of weather to expect by many signs. Here are some of them:-
When the crescent moon is on its back in the sky rain is coming.
When the moon is clear it is a sign of good weather but when rings are round the moon it is a sign of bad weather.
When there are streamers from the sun when it is setting it is a sign of good weather, and when it sets a good red in the evening the next day will be fine.
When the sun and wind come to-gether at mid day rain is coming. It happens in showery weather only.
When the sun rises a watery red it is a sure sign of rain.
When a lot of small clouds, called cow-tracks, are in the sky it is a sign of rain too.
They used to say long ago that if there were high floods at Hallow Eve the crops would be dear in Spring.
It was said too that:-
"A wet May and a warm June,
Makes the farmer whistle a merry tune"
Which meant that his crops would be good.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
