  1. Long ago the children were more healthy and stronger then the children now. They never wore a boot or shoe until they were twelve or thirteen years of age. The children go barfooted now every year in the months of summer. There is one man in this parish named John Dardis and he repairs all the local people's boots and shoes. In olden times he would make the children's boots and shoes and also the men's. There was a man living in Staholmoy named Philip Farrelly who was also a shoemaker, he is dead about twenty years now. In Spandaw there was also another shoemaker named Patrick Halfpenny. There was also a man named Thomas Reilly and the people called him the "Gripper" for a nickname and he also used to make shoes for the people and also repaired them. Patrick Halfpenny taught him this trade. Nowadays there are no shemakers because there are so many factories in Ireland.
