- In Tuitestown Lake about two miles from here a chest of gold is supposed to be hidden. One of the Tuites, who lived in Tuitestown Castle, Ballinea, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, hundreds of years ago hid it for fear the English would rob him of it. When Tuite had placed the treasure in the lake he asked one of his servants would he guard it for him. The servant consented. To make sure that it would be guarded for all time Tuite shot his servant so that his ghost should guard it. It is said that anyone who tries to find it is chased from the placed by a huge fish with a horse's mane.In the fort of Rathconrath (about seven miles west of Mullingar in the parish of Milltown, barony of Moyashal and Magheradernan) a crock of gold is supposed to be hidden.
