- One of the old crafts carried on in this district long ago was the making of rush candles. Soft green rushes were the best for making the candles. Each rush made one candle. Most of the green covering was peeled off but a narrow strip was left on one side from top to bottom to be used as a wick without which the candle would not burn. It was then dipped in hot grease which was held in a vessel called a grisset. The grisset was narrow at both ends and in the middle. The grease was generally got from fried fat bacon. When the rushes were well greased they were lifted out and left to cool. They were then left aside till required. There was a special candlestick to hold these candles. It was shaped like a(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
