- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)Howth written neatly on the van. The word Howth was written in Irish letters a very rare thing to be seen at that time or for many years after. John was a harness maker by trade and always had some for sale in the wagon. He generally stopped for over a week in a Boreen at a place called Tone or Tonelagee (?) a townland about a half a miles east of the Three Jolly Pigeons a wayside inn mentioned in the poem of Oliver Goldsmith called the Deserted Village. His annual visit to this locality was looked upon with great anxiety. He mended harness for the farmers of the district. Another man named Paddy the Rover or Paddy Malone and his wife Nancy travelled these roads a long period ago. His birthplace called Yellow Lanes near Swords in Co. Dublin. His wife and his son were conveyed in a contrivance called a "creel", two rod baskets thrown across the donkey's back and then strapped, all these visited here about sixty years ago. "Travellers" generally visit this district before fairs and particularly before the fair of Ballinasloe.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
