- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)the year Tang N.S. was opened. There was another hedge school at Noughill crossroads in the garden of Matt Corrigan about two miles S.E. of Ballymahon near Tang chapel. The teachers in this district were always the owners of the houses where there school was held. The teachers were paid by the children who brought a quarter of oaten meal bread and a penny or two and occasionly a bit of bacon,or they might bring a bit of pork and black-puddings if the childrens parents killed a pig,and oftentimes a head of cabbage.
The children brought a sod of turf every morning in Winter. English, writing, and Sums were the subjects taught. Irish was never spoken or taught and at that time it was supposed to ruin the childs education. Writing was done by quill pens made of goose feathers. The children were generally seated on wooden stools or on blocks of wood. There was no such thing as a blackbird(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
