- Shops were very uncommon in the olden days about three hundred years ago. On this account people had to go very far for their food except on Sundays when they were stalls outside the churches after Mass. Selling is not in stalls on Sundays now but it is done in the shops. Those who live far from the town do not do their shopping until after Mass on Sunday. There is a man in my district and he will not either buy or sell goods on a Sunday. There are many names for a penny in this district some of them are: copper, wing, dib, brown and a clocker. For a half penny: pig. For a sixpence: tanner, kick, hound. For a shilling: bob, four hares. There used to be very big markets long ago everyone brought out something to sell. I had a penny with R. Stafford on it and I kept it for a long time at last I spent it and two years after I got it back in Dublin, I spent it again and got it back again in Athlone, I spent it again but I did not get it back so far.
