Both these epitaphs were written in the last
century and can be seen and read quite
easily at the present time in Columcille graveyard.
That of Francis Carey close to the walk leading
(leading) to the front of the church on the north
side and that of Thomas Campbell close to the
style on the South-East side of the graveyard. A
large marble headstone which must have cost
hundreds of pounds has been erected to the
memory of the mulligan family, known as the Captain Mulligans
of Aughakine in Columcille graveyard. But the old
captan of '98 fame does not rest beneath it. He
was interred in the burial place on Inish Mór
Island. The first corps laid to (rer) rest in Dunbeggan
graveyard 100 years ago was buried close to the sacristy.
The ceremony it is said was a very impressive
one; a strange coincident occured in 1932 owing to the extending of the church. The ashes of the first corps
was raised and re-interred in a new burial
plot which was given as a donation by Mr. B.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
