   Ash Wednesday - People make nettle-tea for this day. It consisted of the water of boiled nettles thickened slightly with oat-meal. They ate the boiled nettles with potatoes for their dinner. People did not put out the ashes from fireplace nor wore anything new on that day.

   St. Patrick's Day - An abundance of whiskey was always necessary for St. Patrick's Day "to drown the Shamrock." Wearing a small piece of shamrock was considered a sign of a "mean person" hence the bunch of shamrocks as big as a head of cabbage worn by some men. Children wore "Patrick's Crosses" rings of green and white ribbon sewn together.
   You could shoot a hare
   Or fish or snare
   And never a keeper's warning
   You could cut a branch
   On a landlord's ranch
   On St. Patrick's Day in the morning."

   Spy Wednesday - was observed much the same as Ash Wed. The principal meal consisted of nettle tea and boiled nettles.
