1. Irish in the Parish of Denn (ar lean)

   (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)

   A grand-uncle of Pa Ferguson, Loonogs, Crosskeys, was a noted Irish Scholar and hedgeschool teacher. It is said that he had eight Irish manuscipts. Some believe that these are still preserved in his nephew's house in Loonogs. I couldn't verify this although I enquired.

   The place names of the parish are very difficult to explain. A manuscript in Maynooth College dating from the time of James I gives much interesting information about the topography and land division of this as well as other parishes in the Barony. Here are a few of the Irish words used frequently.

   
   batán = wop of straw.

   cuiseog = blade of grass

   poirín = little potatoe.

   ceis = make-shift bridge

   locha leech = leech

   the dúithche = a place

   baicín = stick

   sráth = holm

   tamhán = churl

   gearróg = bit of ridge

   glár agus clábar = muck

   
   lán a' bhaile = So and so - always had lán a' bhaile at his parties very big crowd

   
   gríósach = glowing embers
   bannoc = cake of bread

   clúdóg = collection of eggs

   criseag = St Brigid's Cross

   gugán = wooden vessel

   starmóg = a yarn

   túrú = great noise

   I criged (ie. cnag) my toe against a stone

   céasóg = sow with first litter

   bac agus bocan (of turf)
