  1. Poitín was extensively made in Cavan in days gone by. It is made on a small scale to this day and those "who know the ropes" can get a drop any day in Cavan town. During the trouble (1916-1923) it was sold as whiskey in many public houses. A coloering was used. it can be bought now for 5/= (5 shillings) per pint.
    John F. Fleming (the Reever) of Cormeen , Parish of Kilmore was a well-known cooper, fowler and poteen maker Stills and worms were then made by tinkers who always kept the secrets of the trade. John J. heard of a great still maker in Ballinamuck (or Drumlish) and he went there to get a worm made. He hoped to see the stiller at work and to be able to make a worm himself afterward. He was told that the worm would be ready on a certain day, but Fleming said he would wait and have it home with him. The stiller gave him a few glasses of poteen to put him to sleep. John F. then lay on a a "shakedown"
