- The Whitlow: Red Aime Smith of Bansho, Crosskeys, had the cure for the whitlow. She used herbs. At least one of those whom she cured lost the first joint of the affected finger. Anne died about 10 years ago and was then 90 years of age. Dirty Mouth: Red Mc Breen of Crosskeys a man who never saw his father had the cure. A person who was sent to him to be cured of dirty mouth told me that all he noticed Mc Breen doing was bending down and breathing into the dirty mouth. In Carrick, Co Donegal there was a more elaborate ceremony and rather long prayers said in Irish.Mumps: Pat Larney, Conglas, Crosskeys was one of the many who had the cure. The person with the mumps was taken to the pig-stye where the ass's headstall was fixed on his head and shoulders. Then Larney took the reins and trotted the patient round the stye three times saying "muckla muckla, sean a go the mucla". The pig-stye used had to be detached from other buildings.
