- Potatoes are growing on our farm. My father ploughs the ground in spring and about the 1st of April he harrows the ground and then puts out the manure. The people of this locality plant the potatoes in ridges. When the manure is out in small heaps on each ridge, the furrows are ploughed, the manure is spread, and the potatoes dropped in rows of three, one foot between each row. Two men put clay on them with spades. Spades are not made locally but are bought in a shop. The following is a drawing of a local spade. In olden days wooden ploughs were used pulled by bullocks, but are now not used. People help one another, especially with horse-work. Potatoes are sprayed about three times in July to keep away the disease known as the blight. The weeds are pulled in August. The new potatoes are dug in October and are usually gathered by young boys and girls. The sound potatoes are put in pits and(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
