- My name is Pat O'Donnell and I come from Donegal,
I am you know a deadly foe to traitors one an all
For the shooting of James Carey
I was tried & guilty found
II
I sailed on board the Millrose in August 83
And on my voyage to Capetown he was unknown to me
When I found out he was Carey we had angry words & blows
This villain tried to take my life on board of the Melrose.
III
I stood up in my own defence to fight before I'd die
My pocket pistol I drew forth and at him I let fly
I fired at him a second time, I pierced him through the heart
I gave him the third volley before he did depart.
IV
His wife and son came running down to the cabin where he lay
And found him lying in his gore which filled them with dismay
"O'Donnell you shot my husband" Mrs Carey did reply
I did then in my own defence, kind madam" then said I.
V
The captain had me hand cuffed and in strong irons bound
And he gave me up a prisoner when we landed in Capetown
I was brought back to England till my trial day came on
And the prosecutors for the crown was Carey's wife and son.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
