- St Stephen’s DayOn St Stephen’s day all the young boys and sometimes grown up people gather together, dress up in old clothes and go around from house to house gathering money. When going around the boys bring with them a long stick and a little box tied to it in which to carry the wren in. They also bring with them musical instruments for to play music. When they go around they play music, dance and sing the thyme of the wren. The rhyme is as followsThe wren the wren, the king of all birds
On St Stephens day she was caught in the furze.
Although she is small her family is great
Rise lik a lady and give me a treat
Up with the kettle and down with the pan.
Give me a penny to bury the wren. When the boys have all the houses in the district gone round they divide the money they got in the houses equally among themselves and go home well pleased.Collected by Mollie Galligan.
