   Emily's cruel father, it lay heavily on his breast -
   The murder of young |Edmond, and the crime he soon confessed;
   He paid the penalty of the law and died a public show
   For the killing of young Edmond bold, who ploughed the low lands low.

   His love was broken hearted and from that fatal day
   She mourned for her lover and slowly pined away.
   The little fishes in the stream that wander to and fro
   Remind me of young Edmond bold, down in the low lands low.

Where ghastly famine grins a sickly sneer And desolation in dark robes appear; Where wasting hunger, craving want and woe Proclaims pale death's advancing sure and slow.
