    The farmers long ago used the same method for tilling the soil as the people do nowadays. At first the manure is spread on the soil and then it is ploughed into two sod ridges. Loys are used in many parts of Ireland. The people long ago had all the potato soil stripped before the first of March. Nowadays the farmers "heart" the ridges and leave the seed in the centre at the same time. The potatoes are split for the brows of the ridges and they are planted with spades.
