- Fifty years ago horse racing and strawboys were two of the principal items at Irish weddings. The horses would be well fed and groomed and the straw would be prepared many days before the wedding took place.
From Maudabawn Chapel to Patrick McCabes Drumgoon (after the marriage would be celebrated) was a favourite course. McCabes at that time was a public house where both horses and jockeys would receive refreshments at the expense of the newly married couple. Sometimes the enjoyment would end with a quarrel but usually the parties ended good friends and all agreed in wishing the newly married couple long life and happyness.
About fifty years ago there was a matchmaker in every district. John higgins Latuly was the match-maker of this distric. He would arrange marriages between boys and girls that he knew. He would then be invited to the wedding and treated as an important guest.
