- The people in olden times made different kinds of bread wheaten bred, oaten meal bread, and barley bread and they used to grind the grain at home.
In those days the people would have quern's. Those were round shaped stones with a fairly small hole in the centre and were used for the purpose of grinding.
They used to put one quern on the table and then put the grain up on that, then there used be a handle on the other quern and they used to twist the top quern round on a spillet and in that way they used grind the grain.
At that time the women of Cratloe used to make potato cakes which they used to call "boxty" or "stampy". This is the way they made it, they would grate the potatoes and they used to put them(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
