Ar an leathanach seo

  1. Long ago people never saw loaf-bread as most people nowadays use. They only ate homemade bread simply made of oats, wheat, barley or rye, and sometimes of yellow meal or Indian meal.
    None of this was bought except the yellow meal or the Indian meal. a small patch of wheat or other grain used be sown by the farmers. This used not be threshed with a threshing machine but with a flail.
    When it used be threshed, the people used grinf it in a quern. A quern is composed of two stones. One of these was round on one side and flat on the other side. There was a hole in the middle. The other stone used be laid up on this one and there used be a handle in it. It uused be ground. This was a very slow way.
    The peopl of long ago used make 'stampy' bread or 'boxty'. This was made from potatoes. The potatoes used be grated and the juice was used for making starch. These potatoes mixed with flour are baked and make strong bread which the people nowadays could not eat much of. In some places this is still made but not as
