- Butter making is at present carried out far in an easier way than it used to be in older times.
The churns we have now are very different towards the churns of long ago.
The churns of long ago were shaped round and very wide at the bottom which got narrower up along. There was a staff in these churns and a round board in the top with holes in it which was joined to the staff. There was also a wooden cup for preventing the cream from splashing out of the churn while the person moves the staff up and down when making the butter.
When the butter is made it is put into a wooden keelar and washed well in spring water only. When it is washed it is made into pounds ready for the maker.
