- Long ago we had a churn at home. It is about twenty-five years since churns were last used. It was a common old make of churn. Its height about two feet six inches; width at top about a foot and width at bottom about one foot six inches. The different parts of the churn are the lid, the staff, and the dash. In summer the butter used be made twice a week and in winter three times a week. The woman of the house that usually did the churning. If a stranger came in during churning they usually took a turn because it was believed that the butter would not gather unless they did (that) take the turn.
