  1. There are many ruins on the banks of the Blackwater, but the one I am about to mention is Strancally Castle. This, like Templemichael Castle, was owned by one of the Fitzgeralds. He kept a number of visitors during the Summer months but he could keep one at a time. This Fitzgerald was a cruel man and thought to get his visitor's money.
    This castle contains a room in which there was a 'murdering-hole' and this hole was connected with the river. Into this room he put his visitors to sleep. There was only one bed in the room. When anyone went into the bed, it turned over. The occupant was thrown into the hole and the body was carried away by the river.
