- When a person got a disease long ago, a herb of some kind was used as a cure.When a person got a sprain in the ankle he or she, would send out for marshmallow which is a geranium-like plant and grows wild along the country ditches. The plant was taken in and pounded up. It was then mixed with lard, so as to form and ointment, and rubbed on the sprain. Not long after the sprain would heal.When a person got a sty in the eye, a withered branch, with a thorn on it, was broken off a gooseberry-bush.(continues on next page)
