   1. Old Daniel McDonald, the fiddler, sat
   At eve on the Fairy Knowes [sic],
   That rise from the smooth green, grassy flat,

   He was weary and worn, and he sat to think
   And played him a lonely tune
   As the sun in the west was beginning to sink
   Giving place to the rising moon.

   And the sun on the mountain top delayed
   As loath to forego the pleasure,
   A glorious sight! The western sky
   Was one bright golden glow

   And melted away below.

   With its glory was all replete
   From the mountain top where the rays got birth
   To where, near the minstrel’s feet,
