- Almost Two Hundred Years AgoHand-Carved CrucifixThese drawings represent the actual size etching symbols of a hand-cared crucifix belonging to Mr. Andrew Gallagher "Big Andy" of Balybun, Castlefin, Co. Donegal. The crucifix was carved either by his great grandfather's brother, or possibly by his great-great grandfather's brother. As can be seen fro the back view of the crucifix (right) it was probably carved in 1758.I fail to understand the symbols:-
(1) Under the right arm
(2) Under the feet
(3) Under the left arm
(4) The double strokes on the left hand edge of the crucifix
(5) The bottom drawing which ____ suggest a small potThe representation of the cock, hammer, nails and whips are of course obvious. The cross measures 10 1/4" in length and 2 1/4" in breadth.Mr Andrew Gallagher tells me that his great grandfather, and g. grand uncle are both in the Donaghmore Protestant Graveyard which in former times belonged to the Catholic Church.(continues on next page)- Collector
