  1. On the other side of the Glen is a place called Woodland, where the Big House used to be. One hundred years ago the Johnstons lived there. The most famous of them was Master Joe, but the people used to always speak of him as Joe.
He was a big, powerful, daring man, who feared neither God, man nor the devil. He used always ride across country on a big black horse called Fag-a-Bealach No gate, wall, ditch or burn could ever beat this horse. The people liked Joe but they were afraid of him.
Joe used to gallop into town and tie his horse to the tavern railings. All the boys about had to join Joe in the tavern. Joe kept them all till whatever time he was ready to go home. If ever any of them slipped away before that time Joe would thrash him without mercy the next time they met.
