There are many old customs associated with Christmas Day and the other holidays.

    (continued from previous page)
It is the first day the hunting season starts.
On Shrove Tuesday the pancakes are made and the ring put into them.
On St John's night the people light bonfires.
St Martins day the blood is spilled of a cock at doorsteps.
Chalk Sunday is the first Sunday in Lent, and every old unmarried man gets chalked.
On St.Bridget's eve some people put up a cross made of straw or rushes on the ceiling. It is said that where ever a cross in honour of St.Bridget is hung, that house or place would never take fire.
