  1. I visited Ahascragh though not the first time
    I worked in that neat town in my youth and prime.
    There the girls and boys were all jovial and free.
    I loved them and will, wheresoever I be.
    Though thirty long years make a wonderful change
    The same happened elsewhere, yet I thought it strange.
    But, oh, for the laughter, the dance and the song,
    and the harmless jokes of that beautiful throng.
    Of the hundreds I knew there remained only seven
    Some went out foreign the rest went to heaven.
    Old John McDermott was hearty and grand.
