As regards the school in Gortinure Séamus Browne Gortinure writes that They(the pupils) wrote on slates with slate pencils. There were about sixty scholars going to it. It was a dwelling place before it was turned into a school. Gustavus Dobson lived in it. There is a lane leading to it from the road. The Inspectors came to examine them once a year and when the Inspector would go the master would send up to the house of John Reynolds Cloon for a creel of apples and they(the pupils) would have to run races for the apples until they were gone.
