  1. Old Houses
In olden times houses were built very differently from what they are now a days. They were sometimes built of stones without any mortar and sometimes of clay and wattles. They usually consisted of one bed room and a kitchen which served as a sitting room and parlour. The old houses contained very little furniture except stools and a form. The table was hung up against the wall. The people drank from porringers? and noggins
The fire was generally built in the centre of the floor and the smoke curled up amongst the rafters and went out through an opening in the roof, but at a later period chimneys of stone and mortar were built. The houses were all thatched. The thatch was generally procured from the mountain where rushed grow plentifully.
In some of the old houses there was no glass in the windows, but instead a bu ch of rods were tied together and at the approach of a storm these were placed in the window and at the foot of the door. The old floors were made from a tough blue clay. There was never a door case made in which to place the door instead it was kept up by means of stone props.
