- Long ago the kind of lights the people had were bog-deal at first and dipped candles later on. The way they used the bog-deal was a man went to the bog with a hatchet suitable for the purpose, and cut a large block of bog deal into small pieces which he would carry hom with an ass an baskets, and place them on a wall where they would be drying. When dry he would split them into chips and then place them on a hob near the fire. Then when the would need light some of the family would take one of these chips and light it and hold it for the rest. Some people calle these chips spails. They dipped canles were made from rushes peeled and dried to make wicks. These wicks were dipped in melted tallow. They were then called dipped candles. There was a little bit of a block with a bit if tin on the side of it to hold the little candles. These candles were considered dangerous because cats(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
