Prepare some cold milk. Have the tongs red hot. Dip the tongs into the cold milk and hold it there until the milk gets warm. Then drink. The milk is supposed to absorb the cure from the red hot tongs.
Cuts from nails, forks
Get the nail, fork, space etc which did the harm. Put it into the ire and leave it there as long as possible e.g. if a nail it is left in the fire all day. If a pitch fork, spade ie it is left there at least to get red hot.
Ashes: Ashes around roots of cabbage, along walls etc will keep slugs out of a cabbage plot.
