- Long ago the people made rush candles. The people that time pulled the rushes peeled them and then they put them over the fire to dry.
They had a little candle pan and they melted grease in it then dipped the rushes in it and when they were taken out they were candles, little candles and showed good light.
The candle pan is oval shaped made from iron with a flat handle. There are three feet under it and it is also used for making wax.
Years ago the people dyed their own clothes. They cut the tops off the heather and boiled them. They put through cropres and logwood then it would become lovely dark green.
To dye with cropres and logwood without heather it would dye the clothes black. Another dye the people used used maple soap this would dye any colour, it was much the soap we know but you could get any colour you wanted.
