- The only name which the people of this district can remember for the schools long ago is “Hedge Schools”. One teacher was left in each district, and this was usually a man.
“An Máigistir Beag” was the nickname of the school master who was kept here. He had his own little house, where himself and his wife and son lived. The people built the house for him. His payment was his food, but if anybody could afford a little money they gave it to him. Other people brought milk, butter, and eggs. More brought cabbage and potatoes and oatmeal.
The school was held in the master’s house. The children used to sit on stools round the master. The subjects taught were reading, writing, and spelling. Irish was taught for a while, but the English put it down. The old people tell us that some(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
