But they told the witch as they went away that she would never get another chance if she tried another of her tricks again.
He outwitted the giant with his cleaving sword for the cook’s son ran in and out between the giant’s legs and each time gave a tremendous slash to him. After many injuries the giant to save his life gave the cook’s son half his kingdom and his four treasures; his hawk to catch game as it flew, his hound to catch game on the ground, his pointer or setter to show where the bird was when he wished to hunt it himself and his beautiful horse to carry him to the hunting field. The cook’s son being now a king himself became very fond of hunting but there was one hare he never could overtake. It always disappeared into a certain enchanted rath and he found himself hunting it some other day. At length he took courage and followed the hare into the cave of the rath and from that on, neither he nor his hawk, hound, setter or horse were ever seen again.(continues on next page)
