  1. (continued from previous page)
Lord Leitrim was about the worst landlord mentioned in history, he would not even allow the people to keep a goat. He went from place to place on horse-back and he always brought a terrier dog with him and if he saw a goat graze on any man's land he would put the terrier dog in after him and let him drag him to pieces. If any of his tenants improved his land, or repaired his house, he would remove him to the middle of a bog, where there would be bad land and he would have to build a hut for himself and his family.
He employed men from time to time to make roads for him through different parts of the country. Whatever work he got done he got it done well and he was counted a good paymaster. Mr Coote Geeland (?) of Cloonageeher made roads for him through various parts of his territories; he had also to sweep the road from Cloontumper to John Reynolds's shop Johnston's Bridge each Saturday to have it clean for Sunday.
When Lord Leitrim would be going from his castle he would wear a coat of armour, and he would have three carriages, and he usually sat in the middle one.
Lord Leitrim lived in a castle at Lough Rinn, Co. Leitrim. When it was heard that Lord Leitrim was shot, his tenants lit big bonfires through the country.
