- Long ago there were no dyes to be bought in the shops. The people made dyes themselves and they were as good and as fast as the dyes we can buy now. They used to pull the 'caonach' off the big stones and the rocks first. Then they boiled it. When it was boiled they drained it. Then they put a few spoonfuls of 'copperas' into it and then they let it cool. Then that was the dye. This dye was rust-colour.-
