  1. I have heard many stories about events that happened during the famine of 1847.
    During this period an old man and his wife and daughter lived dow at the pier where the boathouse now stands. Their names were Brogans. At one time they were rich but Mr. Brogan was a terrible gambler and he lost all his money. At one time he owned fifty acres but he lost it all except two acres by not paying his rent. In 1847 he had potatoes in one acre but they failed to grow. When the potato-crop failed he had nothing to support his wife and daughter. The neighbours had not enough for themselves and so could not give the Brogans anything to eat
