    smoke went out in a hole through the roof. The fire was always made of turf and wood.
    The floors were made of "daub". Half-doors were in use.
    For light, people made use of rush lights. These were arranged on a stand about three feet high. The dip candles were used in many houses. People who had a mould, in which they were made, made them out of melted tallow and used hemp for a wick.
