used to go on horses to where they would be married. The wives used to sit on the horses with the husbands. John Grace of Ballavarra was married in Glenmore. Those, who attended the wedding, went on horses through the fields because there were drifts of snow on the roads. Glenmore is about ten Irish miles from Ballavarra.

In our parish the principal time for marriages to take place is during Shrove and during the summer months. On Shrove Tuesday it is a to makes pancakes. It is a great custom to give fortunes to the boy and girl who are getting married. It is an other custom to give all sorts of presents to those who are getting married.
