It is said that the twenty ninth of June is an unlucky day for swimming, in a river or in the sea. There were a lot of people drowned during the last few years on that day. About twenty five years ago a man from Ballavarra was drowned in the river Barrow on that day. His name was Pat Pender. He stood on the bank and jumped into the river to swim. He sank to the bottom and never rose.
