   the boat than any bread. On certain feast-days, such as Christmas-day, they used to make a potato cake. It was made from potatoes, flour, and butter. The potatoes were broken with the bottom of a mug, and flour put on them. Then they were mixed together, and shaped like a cake. When this was done they cut it into four equal parts, and put them on a kind of a griddle with sides on it, and butter was spread on the bottom of the parts, to keep them from sticking to the griddle, and to keep them from burning. There are a lot of griddles to be seen still in the parish. We have one at home, but it is out of use now. There are some brands to be seen too. They are mostly used now for holding sacks of flour and meal.

   In olden times the people used to make their bread from oaten meal and yellow meal. They used to wet the meal with butter milk. They used to mix soda and salt through the meal. They would leave a piece of iron, the shape of a small wheel, with three legs under it, on the fire. Then they would leave the
