Very few people get married in red or yellow because the old rhyme says-:
Married in blue you wish yourself true.
Married in yellow ashamed of the fellow.
Married in red you wish your-self dead.
Married in black you wish your-self back.
Married in green ashamed to be seen.
Married in brown you'll live out of town.
Married in white your chosen alright.
The old Irish customs regarding marriages are fast dying out. The parties at the bride's and bridegroom's home, the "drag home" etc are nearly all now things of the past. Now there is a quiet wedding with the wedding breakfast in the bride's home, and after a honeymoon in Dublin, the married couple settle down to their daily tasks. "Matchmaking" still goes on in this locality but that custom too is almost dead as the modern young people prefer to select their own partners.
There are quiet a good many bachelors in the parish and the average age of the men getting married would be forty. This is due chiefly to the hesitancey of the older people in "making over" their land to their sons until, very often, they are on their death beds.
